Odometer: ~400 miles. As per the factory break-in instructions, I’ve been relatively gentle. I’m staying under 4500 rpm (barely), and I’m varying engine speeds as much as possible. I’m staying away from wide open throttle as well, but I’ve spent plenty of time north of 3000 rpm, and so far, the one thing that has really struck me is the NOISE! I mean, it’s absolutely incredible. To the best of my understanding so far: there are three noise “modes”. In what I will call “quiet” mode (dynamic off, exhaust switch off), everything is relatively well-behaved, although there are some muted cracks and pops on overrun. Then there’s “loud” mode (exhaust switch on, dynamic mode off), where the exhaust automatically opens up at exactly 2750 rpm. It’s sometimes open below that number (haven’t exactly figured out the circumstances but it seems to be open in first gear all the time?), but it’s universally open beyond it. It’s actually kind of cool, because it gives you an extremely noticeable aural notification of passing 2750 if you aren’t looking at the tach. Beyond 2750, it’s wide open and makes all kinds of absolutely ridiculous noises. I’ve had some hilarious looks from people when I run it out to 4000 or so and let it overrun. Then there’s “obnoxious” mode (dynamic on, exhaust switch on), where the exhaust is just locked open, period. This is actually really different from “loud” mode because from 1500-3000 (where it would still normally be closed in “loud” mode) the car makes a LOT of noise. It’s relatively low frequency sound that can seem a bit drone-y, but I love it. The vast majority of my driving time has been in “obnoxious” mode (like, literally 380 of 400 miles). In “obnoxious” mode, throttle overrun at basically any RPM over 2000 (and sometimes even below that) results in cracks and pops that will make your spine tingle and attract the attention of everyone within a few hundred feet of the exhaust. At 2000-3000, overrun results in a few isolated pops and cracks, at 4000-4500, overrun results in a machine gun staccato that I want recorded and played at my funeral. I can’t wait to find out what happens all the way from 4500-7000, but I want to hit 1200 miles first before really opening it up.

Side note- This car attracts a crazy amount of attention, way more than I would have thought.

In terms of overrun, if you let up at full tilt, it sounds like satan playing with pipe bombs.

That is a great car and they sound amazing.

I found this bit of German humor about the break in period for my M3 in my owners manual. “For example, when passing”

How much attention. Good amount or annoying.

Interesting! That's almost exactly what my manual says. Is that for an E46?

E90. That’s actually really interesting, might have to look at the owners manual for my 1 and see if it says something similar.

I would say a good amount I guess, depend on your criteria. More than my GT-R and more than my CLS63. The GT-R would get a ton of attention from certain people, but absolutely zero from others (non-car people). This gets at least a long glance from everyone- it’s just beautiful, and pretty rare. I’ve seen two 458s and a California since I’ve had this car- I've seen zero F-Types.

E90? I had an E92 M3 and I remember the break-in being worded differently. Then again, I didn't follow the break-in period on that car at all.

Here’s a screen shot from the digital copy I’ve got. You have any negative effects from not following it? I know they were saying something about voiding the warranty if you didn’t have the 1200 mile service done. The 1200 mile service on mine was done at 1204 miles. It also sounds like you’ve owned some pretty awesome cars.

Well, the car was totaled at like 2000 miles so unfortunately I wouldn't be able to tell you about any negative effects. What I can tell you is that I drove the car like a maniac for the first 1200 miles and the oil and diff fluid came out looking brand-new.

That sucks, I heard they lowered the F10 M5's oil service interval because the owners weren’t driving them hard enough during the break-in period and they were burning some oil as a result, don’t know the truth to this.

An explanation that puts the blame on the owners? Hmm...

Lowered from like 12 or 15k to 10k is what I heard, I could be completely wrong though

I’ve seen maybe two F types. A black hardtop on the highway and a black convertible at my high school.

When you’re allowed to get above 4500, let that fucker rip. It’s an aural orgasm- an... aurgasm, I guess

Haha, because it’s BMW, and they know that some owners are not gonna wait past the break-in period to be douchebags

Love how these things sound. I remember when I still had the Civic and I was met by a BRG F Type R Convertible at a red light right up front. I turned and gave the guy a thumbs up and he nodded his head.

He floored it when the light went green. That car made noises no Jaguar should be making. I was so jealous

I’m fairly certain they’re being 100% serious. The Bavarians do not joke when it comes to passing etiquette on the Autobahn.

God I love this car. Like I’ve never loved any Jaguar in history. And I love/hate Jaguars. But I just realized something. If you lived in a front plate state and followed said law, it totally ruins the aesthetic of this car.

I may have missed it, but what model did you get? Can't be the 5.0, no manual option, so the 340 or 380 hp? I am totes jelly...

I do live in a front plate state, and I've never had a front plate on any of my cars.

340! I couldn't find an S with the exact options I was looking for, and I really don't care about a mechanical LSD. I'll never track this car, and I'm not too eager to get the tail out either. That being said, the V6 and V6S are essentially identical, and most importantly they sound the exact same.

That's cool. I think the car is phenomenal either way, just wondering. I would seriously consider one in a few years when the kids are older. Congrats!
